Leading through innovation and excellence

The Caton Engine

There is a simple truth about the modern Internet. It was never designed for the kind of data in use today. Today, over 80% of all Internet traffic is video. High quality, high resolution, interactive video is the future of internet data, and traditional methods of data transmission can not keep up.

The Caton Engine has been designed specifically to overcome this challenge. It provides a new way to move large amounts of video, files, and other types of data around the world reliably, affordably and with the ability to scale to meet the massive needs of today’s growing Internet.

The Challenge

Providing professional quality real-time video and accelerated managed file solutions across today’s Internet has multiple challenges that focus on providing a high level of bandwidth utilization and the associated Quality of Service (QoS) while overcoming the limitations of the current network.

Without using expensive and time-prohibitive dedicated private networks, traditional network solutions can not provide guaranteed speeds across the entire path from source to destination. Data congestion and collisions can drastically reduce the actual speed of the real-time video and file-based transmissions. For real-time video, this can lead to lower quality and less reliable delivery. For file-based workflows, it can lead to drastically increased transfer times and associated costs.

Jitter and Delay

Jitter and delay (or latency) are two fundamental measurements for real-time video transmission. High levels of jitter can introduce flaws in decoded pictures and sound in real-time transmissions. Delay is a factor of the end-to-end time required from source to destination including encode and decode cycles, as well as, network transmission and error correction requirements. Both of these factors significantly affect performance in conventional transmission solutions.

Packet loss

Data packet error or loss is a normal and unavoidable risk with modern networks that can not be easily overcome with conventional solutions. Traditional protocols either lack basic error correction and management layers or suffer from extreme susceptibility to high latency and jitter.

In conclusion, bandwidth utilization and QoS challenges for live video transmission over the Internet are a composite of bandwidth, quality (compression rate), latency and jitter. The combination of these factors can lead to significant issues in delivering professional quality real-time video and file transfer services across the modern Internet at a reasonable cost.

The Solution - Caton Engine

Based on powerful, optimized protocols that work transparently over existing networks, the Caton Engine gives users a simple, easy-to-use interface for moving data files and streams around the Internet. These protocols use adaptive algorithms and real-time monitoring of network conditions to ensure the best possible Bandwidth Utilization Rate (BUR) regardless of line latency or quality.

R2TP - Real-time video transmission

F2TP - Accelerated Managed File Transfer

R2TP is an IP-based transport protocol designed specifically to solve QoS/QoE problems for live video transmission over the Open Internet. Developed with the industry’s most advanced congestion control techniques, R2TP maximizes Bandwidth Utilization Ratio (BUR) for high-quality content over bandwidth-challenged networks. Advanced, adaptive error correction algorithms create a virtual management layer for video streams even across unmanaged networks.

R2TP supports:

  • Congestion Control - Optimized bandwidth utilization with almost any given bandwidth
  • Advanced, adaptive error correction algorithms to meet changing network conditions
  • True multi-pathing for dynamic bonding of multiple network layers, ensuring quality transmission even when a single network link is not sufficient
  • Ultra-low latency availability for interactive applications
  • BIS encryption for end-to-end security with minimal overhead
  • Fully configurable and dynamically adjustable for differing applications and customer requirements.

Based on the foundations of Caton’s R2TP Engine, the F2TP brings the power and scalability of the Caton Engine to managed file transfers. F2TP provides highly accelerated, enterprise-class file transfer with end-to-end security.

Traditional file transfer technologies such as FTP were never designed for long-distance transfers such as the cross-border and cross-continent demands of today’s Internet. F2TP provides the best-in-class optimization of data links point-to-point and point-to-multipoint with any file size or bandwidth. Internal optimization algorithms provide for maximum throughput on any network connection, even through high managed firewall infrastructure.
